Week 10 – Friday – 5pm

Distance: 10k
Time: 48:03
Incline: 0.5

I took/slacked-off on Monday and Tuesday. My wife/kids were sick all week. Wednesday was ultimate which was great. After the game I had a sore back which persisted through Thursday but was feeling 100% today.

Today’s run was great, despite the two-piece fish & chips I had for lunch. I had my best ever time for my (indoor) 10k, and I had a 0.5 incline on it. Tomorrow I’m going to run 13km, but it will be at a slower pace than the 8mph I worked myself up to today. Given how cold it is I’ll probably be indoors again.

Where’s Mike? oh, there he is…

Well, I’ve definitely fallen off a bit lately, both in running and on the blog. I actually wrote a really great blog post last week, and then lost it someone during posting. I was too lazy to re-type it. So, it’s time to play catch up…
Last week was a great running week. I had runs on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Ultimate on Thursday. The runs were great. I did some ‘fartlek’ (that’s a Swedish word for interval training!)

After last week, I decided to take Friday off. Friday became Saturday, Saturday became Sunday, Sunday became Monday, and suddenly it was Tuesday and I hadn’t been out in 5 days. In my defence, it was cold/snowy here, and my foot hurt (really!)

So, I hit the gym after work today. I think I need to go right after work, once I get home and eat, I have no desire to head out again. My run today was pretty weak. I won’t even bother to say how far. At least I was out though. RIght?

I’ll go again tomorrow, and then Thursday is Ultimate again. I’ll have to go Friday for sure this week.

later.

Week 9 – Wednesday, Friday, Saturday

Wednesday: Ultimate
Friday: Shinney
Saturday:
Distance: 10.3502 km
Time: 62 minutes

I had a great end to last week. We won our ultimate game, and winning is definitely more fun than losing. Shinny was “another tie” but I had a hat-trick. Then a good run on Saturday. I was a bit disappointed that I didn’t break the 1-hour time for this, especially since I ran a shorter outdoor distance than I had been previously. It will happen, though. I opted to stop running all the way into the middle of downtown. It’s crowded and it slows me down at a lot of lights which breaks my rhythm, etc. I’ll have to update the route anyway because I want my outdoor run to be the increasingly longer and longer one.

Week 9 – Tuesday – 730am

Distance: 10km (treadmill)
Time: 52:43
Incline: 0.5

In my experience, my workouts have been better in the afternoon/evening. My body seems more awake at those times.  Yesterday the only convenient time was in the AM, but overall my first (I think) morning run was enjoyable. I had the incline on the entire time which was a nice accomplishment, although I would have liked to break the 50 minute mark. I think that will be my goal for my Friday run. Another neat thing I did was do some periods of faster running. I’d like to be able to turn on the juice when necessary, and to get into the habit of finishing my runs very strongly.

I’ve come up with the schedule I’m going to use for my training until April:
Tuesday: 10-12km (increasing incline)
Wednesday: Ultimate
Friday or Saturday: 10-12km (increasing speed)
Sunday:Increasing distance every week (start at 12km) *preferably morning*

Notes:

  • Monday is off to recover from Sunday
  • Ultimate is interval training
  • Thursday off to recover from ultimate
  • I want to mimic what I’ll be doing on race day, so I’ll try to get my Sunday run done in the morning.

Week 8 – Sunday – 4pm

Distance: 11.247 km
Time: 62 min

Today’s run was a bit better time than Thursday’s, despite having played hockey last night. I ran the exact same route in similar conditions (a bit wetter, today). It may only be one extra km but I like how it feels to have run half of the total race. It’s also been nice to run outdoors. I prefer that to the treadmill (unless there’s a game on).

It’s been a great vacation. Today I played some video games (for the first time in a month) completely guilt-free (my todo for the vacation is done!). Then once I’d had my fill I got up and ran. I’m already getting excited for the race in April.

Another day, another 10k

The January 1st run was a humbling experience, and I realize that I’m going to have to get a little more serious.  Not next month, not next week, but NOW.

So, I spent 2 hours on Saturday doing a modified form of hill training (see picture below) and then headed out for another 10k on Saturday afternoon.

I was much, much happier with this run.  The weather was warmer which made a difference, but overall I felt better.  Buoyed by the Raptor’s win over Orlando and day dreams of ultimate filling my head I easily completed the run in under an hour, despite the fact that most of the route was on ice and snow.  Had I been on better footing it would have been a great run.

I don’t think I’ll get out again this week.  Holidays are over and it’s time to get back to work.  To compensate, I have squash on Wednesday and ultimate starts on Thursday.  I’ll get to the gym either Monday or Tuesday.

Mike OUT.

New Year’s Day run

As promised we decided to head out for a 10k run on January 1st.  Due to events of the night before we were both going on very little sleep.

Moments before the run, Peter announced that we should run MORE than 10k.  He decided that since we were running 10 why not go one more and then we could say we ran half of the distance of our half marathon.  I wasn’t sure of the wisdom of this, but didn’t voice my concerns.

The previous morning I had purchased a new pair of running pants.  I had always been impressed by people who wore the tight winter running pants and figured the pants would make me a better runner and help me look cool next time I play ultimate in cold weather.

matching outfits is a coincidence

Before the first run of 2009 (matching outfits is a coincidence)

I won’t bore you with the gorry details, but here are a few highlights of the run.

I felt great for the first kilometer…after that I felt bad.

Peter is faster than me.

We ran 11 kilomoters, against my will.

The pants were great.

I have blisters on both of my feet.  Peter says this is because I ‘run funny’.

Peter is faster than me.

It actually wasn’t that bad.  It was a good reminder that I need to start training harder.  Here are a couple of post run pics.  I won’t say how much faster Pete is than me, but note that he is out of the shower and I’m just standing in the front door.
